Nyika National Park (Tanzania side) Adventures

Nyika National Park in Tanzania covers the eastern part of the Nyika Plateau, extending over approximately 800 square kilometers of high-altitude terrain averaging about 2,000 meters above sea level. This park is contiguous with Zambia’s Nyika National Park but the Tanzanian section is less visited and more remote, showcasing dramatic landscapes dominated by undulating grasslands, scattered patches of montane forests, and striking gorges. The cooler climate combined with frequent mists supports a variety of plant species including over 200 species of orchids, rare montane trees, and colorful wildflowers which bloom between September and December.

Wildlife in the Tanzanian Nyika area includes eland, zebra, reedbuck, bushbuck, and the rare roan antelope, among others. Birding is exceptional due to the presence of species such as the Denham's bustard, various endemic species, and raptors that hunt in the open grasslands. Although large predators like lions and leopards are present, sightings are infrequent due to the park's sparse visitor numbers and vast habitat.

Visitors can enjoy hiking across extensive trails that navigate plateaus, valleys, and escarpments, offering clear views over the park’s unique terrain. The Tanzanian side also features historic colonial-era buildings at Chelinda Camp, which serves as the main accommodation and park headquarters. Besides walking and wildlife viewing, Nyika is ideal for photography and stargazing thanks to its remote location and high elevation. Conservation efforts focus on protecting the plateau’s fragile ecosystems and mitigating threats from poaching and habitat encroachment.
